Kuranda: A Village in the Rainforest

Kuranda sits above Cairns on the edge of the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland. Surrounded by ancient rainforest, dramatic waterfalls and winding mountain roads, it is a place characterised by deep greens and rich timber tones.
The village has a character of its own, with colourful shops, local art and a relaxed atmosphere shaped by its creative community, history and surroundings. It is also located on the traditional Country of the Djabugay people, whose connection to this land spans more than 10,000 years.
Kuranda Scenic Railway
The Kuranda Scenic Railway connects Cairns with Kuranda, climbing through the mountains on a historic route past waterfalls, steep hillsides and dense tropical vegetation.
Built in the late 19th century, the railway offers a slower, more immersive style of travel, with heritage carriages, timber bridges, carved tunnels and historic stations that showcase the engineering and craftsmanship of an earlier era.
Colours of Kuranda
Together, Kuranda’s landscape and heritage create a distinctive natural palette – deep greens from the rainforest, rich timber tones throughout the village and railway, and warm dappled light beneath the canopy. These colours and tones provide a natural connection to two of Mount Khiri's collections.
The Highland Series draws from the lush greens found throughout Kuranda, pairing dark green acetate frames with ebony and maple temples.
Meanwhile, the Ember Series reflects Kuranda's warmer tones, featuring black tortoiseshell frames paired with walnut and ebony temples that echo the amber, brown and earthy hues of the landscape.
Kuranda is just one example of the incredible diversity found throughout Australia’s landscapes. For Mount Khiri, these places are both a massive source of inspiration and an important part of our identity as an Australian-owned outdoor-focused brand.
